My former colleague at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Erik Brandt, has an incredibly fresh approach to graphic design as you will see when you look at his blog post about his exhibition at Shoebox Gallery in Minneapolis. Run by artist Sean Smuda, Shoebox Gallery is the 8′ x 8′ storefront window of a shoe store  located at a busy intersection. Anyone who is anyone has exhibited at Shoebox over the years. As we in Kenosha and Racine work with the storefront art exhibitions we should be inspired by Shoebox. This  strategy can be pretty successful.

I love Erik Brandt’s work. It refuses to stand in either the “fine art” or the “graphic design” camp. For me, it is singular; it is its own species. If you are following contemporary graphic design I recommend that you subscribe to Erik’s very active blog: Geotypografika.

Link to and essay about his show with good pictures.

This just in from Erik: he facebooked me a link to the WIM CROUWEL: A GRAPHIC ODYSSEY exhibition at the Design Museum. Very cool. I like the video interview with the designer. Click here for the short video with Wim Crouwel talking about his work.
